About

Hello

I’m Steph Hill,  psychology and travel have shaped my life and my career is some pretty profound ways, I’ll share more through the articles I write on this site, but to begin with…

In 2004 I lost my partner in the Boxing Day tsunami in Thailand; and, along with my family, sustained life-threatening injuries.

In the aftermath, I lived with debilitating PTSD and grief. I’ve always believed that no one is ever ‘broken’ – though at times I felt dangerously close to running out of alternative adjectives.

I was offered an 18 month waiting list for therapy and a prescription for anti-depressants. As a psychology graduate I decided the latter would be my plan B (I never used) and as a bloody-minded, stubbourn biatch I decided there was NO WAY I could wait around for 18 months for ‘help!’

So, I didn’t…

I went on an adventure…

  • Learning different forms of therapeutic approaches, later becoming a Solution-Focused Hypnotherapist and Psychoeducation Faccilitator and Coach
  • Earned an MSc in Disaster Management & Sustainable Development, leading to an international career with INGO’s & UN Agencies on Human Rights based programmes
  • Created Happy Headwork (Workplace wellbeing & Team Development) and Happy Headwork Community CIC (sustainable wellbeing for communities)
  • Became a loan parent who keeps all three of those work passions running successfully, whilst still being present for school runs and creating a adventures for my son and I

My journey has not been linear (is there such a thing?). There were plenty of dark nights of the soul. Alongside some fairly bonkers moments, like babysitting an orphaned baboon, buying a narrowboat on a whim, and speeding through the Kenyan bush on a hijacked bus, to name a few.

What I’ve learned through taking ‘An Adventurers Mindset’ is that:

Feeling brave rarely comes first. Most of the time, it shows up afterwards.

Life can deal us some truly tough things that are completely out of our control. But we have a responsibility to show up for ourselves and fight for what comes next.

We can choose to weave silver linings into grey clouds and savour the extra-ordinary in simple things.

There is magic almost everywhere, just waiting to be seen, mainly in the kindness of people and the beauty of nature…

I hope this site offers some support to you on your adventures – whatever they may be!
